Shinobi, initially released for arcades in 1987 by Sega, is a side-scrolling action game that established a recognizable franchise. The player controls Joe Musashi, a ninja tasked with rescuing hostages from the Zeed organization.  Gameplay involves navigating levels filled with enemies, utilizing a variety of ninja techniques like shurikens, jumping attacks, and grappling.  Different versions of Shinobi exist for various Sega arcade systems, including the System 16A and System 16B, each with subtle differences in graphics, sound, and potentially gameplay elements. The game's popularity led to numerous sequels and ports on other platforms.  The success of Shinobi cemented Sega's reputation in the action game genre and contributed to its overall success in the late 1980s.
